Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an orthobiologic treatment used to promote healing in injured joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is frequently used in athletes and active individuals to enhance or speed up healing through nonsurgical means. PRP is a product of your own blood with a platelet concentration 5-10x greater than baseline, and it improves the process of tissue repair in acute and chronic problems. PRP is rich in growth factors and cytokines that have been shown to initiate and create a healing mileu in the injured tissue.
In a simple, office based procedure, we draw your blood and then use a centrifuge to spin it down to separate the plasma from other cells, and concentrate the platelets. Then we inject the PRP back into the injured area, using ultrasound guidance, to stimulate healing process. A detailed rehabilitation protocol is also given, with a strengthening program and return to sport timeline. Close follow up and activity modification guidance is given over time after the procedure. Sometimes we do more than one injection into the injured tissue. PRP is successfully used to treat tendon partial tears and tendinopathy (such as “tennis elbow”, achilles tendinitis and hamstring or patellar tendinosis or partial tears), bursitis, ligament injuries and joint degeneration.
